Hearing loss can occur for many reasons. Often the loss is so gradual that it is not immediately recognized. A hearing loss can not only affect quality of life but it can increase the chance of injuries. In the event of a sudden hearing loss, medical attention should be sought promptly.
The following are signs that you may have a hearing loss:
- Problems hearing on the telephone.
- Trouble following the conversation when two or more people are talking at the same time.
- Turn up the TV volume too high.
- Have to strain to understand conversations.
- Don't hear common sounds, such as the phone or the doorbell ringing.
- Have trouble hearing conversations in a noisy background, such as at a party.
- Get confused about where sounds are coming from.
- Misunderstand some words in a sentence and need to ask people to repeat themselves.
- Especially have trouble understanding the speech of women and children.
- Have worked in noisy environments (near assembly lines, jackhammers, jet engines, etc.).
- Many people you talk to seem to mumble (or don't speak clearly).
- People get annoyed because you misunderstand what they say.
- You misunderstand what people are saying and make inappropriate responses.
- You avoid social activities because I cannot hear well and fear that I might reply improperly.
- Family members or friends think you have a hearing loss
