Ear Infection

Children with colds can develop an earache. Younger infants cannot complain of earache, so be on the lookout for other signs. A small child may rub, hold, or tug on their ear. Fussiness, fever, or fluid draining from your child's ear may mean your child has an ear infection. Most ear infections resolve without any treatment other than pain control. Any child under the age of 2 years old who has a fever should be evaluated in the office.

Relieve symptoms with:

  • Acetaminophen or anesthetic drops can help the pain.
  • If your child continues to have a fever 2-3 days after treatment, the pediatrician will re-evaluate the child in the office.
  • Smoking is a big risk factor for ear infections and stopping smoking today will start to reduce the risk to your child and to yourself if you smoke.
