Important Immunization News

DeKalb Clinic Pediatrics is helping to keep your child healthy by providing all the immunizations recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Two new immunizations have been recommended in 2006:

HPV immunization is recommended for girls and young women aged 9 to 26. HPV is the principle cause of cervical cancer. The immunization is given in three doses and helps prevent infection from the strains of HPV that account for 70% of cervical caner.

Rotavirus vaccine is for infants 2 to 8 months old. Rotavirus causes severe vomiting and diarrhea, particularly in the winter months. This immunization is oral and given at the 2, 4 and 6 month check ups.

Other news on immunizations:
Hepatitis A immmunizations is now recommended for all people over 12 months old.
Hepatisis A causes liver infection and can be caught from contaminated food and water. There are 2 doses given 6 to 18 months apart.

A second dose of chicken pox immunization is recommended at the 5 year check up and for everyone who has had one dose of the chicken pox, came out in 2006 and can be given at the initial and second doses for childern who also need MMR.

An improved meningococcal vaccine is recommended for high school age and older teenagers. We started this single dose vaccine in 2005.
